Ring of cold resistance
A ring of cold resistance is a type of ring that appears in NetHack.
Contents
Generation
Wizards may be given a ring of cold resistance as one of the two random rings in their starting inventory.[1]
General stores and jewelers shops can sell rings of cold resistance.
Description
A hero putting on the ring gains the cold resistance property, which lowers or nullifies cold damage from certain attacks, wands and hazards, though this does not necessarily prevent potions in the hero's inventory from being affected. Monsters will not wear this ring.
A hero eating the ring has a 1⁄3 chance of successfully absorbing its magic and gaining intrinsic cold resistance.[2]

Per commit 9942b65d, extrinsic sources of cold resistance have a 99⁄100 chance of protecting the wearer's open inventory from cold damage.Strategy
Like some other resistance rings, the ring of cold resistance may be worth wearing early on to deal with obstacles such as an early wand of cold, or else as aid in obtaining the property intrinsically: for example, blue jellies are sessile but cannot be attacked in melee without triggering their cold passives, and winter wolves and their cubs can generate in the early game and cause severe damage with their breath. Their corpses and tins along of such monsters also serve as decent sources of the intrinsic - additionally, once you have reflection, most sources of cold damage are also unlikely to be a concern.

The ring protecting inventory from cold damage 99% of the time makes it much more useful in protecting potions from cold damage in the long term; freezing spheres also explode in a 3x3 range rather than directly at their target as of commit 6b60618e, making the ring and other extrinsic sources of cold resistance an ideal defense.Identification
The ring of cold resistance is 150zm like many other rings with resistance properties.
History
In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, a ring of fire and cold resistance exists that confers both properties. The ring of cold resistance appears as its own item in Hack for PDP-11, which is also based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, and is included in the initial item list for Hack 1.0.
Messages
- The cold water faucet flashes brightly for a moment.
- You dropped a ring of cold resistance into a sink - this will prompt you to type-name the ring.
Variants
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, Flame Mages and Necromancers may be given a ring of cold resistance as the random ring in their starting inventory.[3][4] Ice Mages start with cold resistance and will never be given a ring of cold resistance this way.[5] This also applies to SlashTHEM.
SporkHack
SporkHack uses a partial intrinsic system, allowing the ring of cold resistance and other items that grant extrinsics to remain useful for much longer.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the ring of cold resistance gives a message when worn (though it does not auto-identify), and like all extrinsic sources of cold resistance it also protects open inventory from cold damage. In addition, extrinsic sources of resistance properties are much more desirable due to the temporary intrinsic system.
Message
- Your finger feels warm!
- You put on a ring of cold resistance.
xNetHack
In xNetHack, extrinsic sources of cold resistance such as the ring completely protect a hero or monster's inventory from cold damage.
EvilHack
In EvilHack, the ring of cold resistance more useful in the short and long term, e.g. once the hero starts encountering casters that use the ice bolt monster spell—cold resistance and some other intrinsics are partial intrinsics as in SporkHack, and reflection no longer completely protects from the effects of cold rays.
The ring can be worthwhile to safely traverse the Ice Queen's Realm, as it blocks cold damage from the level itself and the attacks of several monsters within—beware of ice nymphs stealing the ring off your finger if you do not have full intrinsic resistance or a backup extrinsic source!
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, Acid Mages, Corsairs, Electric Mages, Nobles, and Pirates may be given a ring of cold resistance as the random ring in their starting inventory.
Hack'EM
In Hack'EM, Ice Mages cannot start with a ring of cold resistance as in SLASH'EM.
Intrinsic and extrinsic resistances function as in EvilHack, along with reflection.
